Bermuda Compass wins global award

Tehran - IRNA - The idea of a design tool by an artist and researcher of traditional arts, titled Trigonometer (Bermuda Compass), was selected in the industrial design section of the International Kioskedia Academy 2023 in Germany.
The winner of the Kioskedia Academy Award in an interview with IRNA:

The evolution of the compass took place in the lap of traditional Iranian arts/The Bermuda compass won a world award

According to IRNA's handicraft reporter, the idea of the triangle design tool, designed by Mohamad Ali Vadood , an artist and researcher of traditional Iranian arts, and which has a patent certificate and scientific approval from the Scientific and Industrial Research Organization of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, was selected under the exclusive name Bermuda Compasses in the industrial design section of the International kioskedia Academy 2023 and received the silver medal of this event

The idea for the three-pronged compass came to me when I was designing "Morghe Hagh."

Mohamad Ali Vadood stated in an interview with IRNA's handicraft reporter: "The idea of designing the triangular compass came to me in 2003 when I was designing a work of the righteous bird, in order to be able to use the beautiful patterns of the elderberry wood in a uniform and homogeneous manner throughout the body of the statue. At that time, in designing the righteous bird, I had to be able to directly create the statue with triangular pieces without the need for a preliminary design or complex geometric calculations to draw the scope of the design."

The artist and researcher of traditional arts explained: I made the prototype of the three-ear finder in 2003 from boxwood at the Traditional Arts Research Institute of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and received its approval. Three years later, by submitting it to the Patent and Industrial Property Registration Office under the name of three-pronged , a patent registration certificate was received, followed by scientific approval from the Scientific and Industrial Research Organization of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.

"Of all the tools man has made throughout history, the compass is one of the most influential design tools, as it has played a significant role in advancing civilization; from the invention of the wheel to advances in geometry and architecture, and from artistic symmetries to industrial drawings, all owe their function to the compass," said Wadud. "Although the compass is often known as a tool for drawing circles, it is actually an important tool in measurements and longitudinal measurements between two points, and has been known to be useful for determining linear distances for thousands of years."

The artist and researcher of traditional arts added: "It may not be clear which civilization and which land invented the compass, but the history of geometry and art will testify that the evolution of the compass with a third arm took place in the traditional arts and crafts of Iran this year

He said: "With the increasing advancement of volumetric geometry, various methods were invented to create geometric forms, including moqrans and many others. This process led to the need for efficient tools for estimating, measuring, and continuously measuring increasing and increasing. Although the response to this need in the history of human civilization was partially met by using the molding method, the implementation limitations and time-consuming processes in this method are considered a difficult and laborious challenge for craftsmen.

Bermuda compass with the ability to measure between three points

Wadud explained: The Bermuda compass can be considered an evolved compass that, with the addition of a third arm capable of 360-degree movement around the axis of the first arm and the possibility of simultaneous longitudinal movement on the axis of the first arm, provides the necessary maneuver for measuring and sizing between three points and forming various triangle shapes. The presence of graduated plates that specify angles from zero to ninety degrees allows recording the angles of arms A, B, and C, and the presence of a 360-degree graduated plate also allows detecting and recording the angle of arm C around the axis of arm A.

He added: "Creating geometric volumes often requires complex calculations or the use of digital triangulations, which makes the work difficult for craftsmen. However, the Bermuda compass can be used to measure and measure geometric volumes, both complex and simple, including moqrans, etc., without the need for any pre-calculation, and thus gives artists and craftsmen more power in the design and implementation processes and expands their scope of authority in ideation and design."

The artist and researcher of traditional arts stated: Volumetric arts, including sculpture, architecture, industrial design and many others, often require measurements to create symmetry between two points of the design or work. Most people active in these fields use special rulers or simple compasses to determine symmetry between two points, while in most cases, in fact, many of these artists and craftsmen need a tool that can measure symmetry between more than two points, and simple compasses are useless in such situations. The lack of a third arm that can do this in these conditions under a very short time and without any difficult and complex calculations is always felt in designs, ideation and even in the implementation process. the Bermuda compass is inspired by this feeling of need

Technical specifications and application of Bermuda compass

"The Bermuda compass can be much more practical than simple compasses," said Weddoed, "because in practice there is no tool for measuring and sizing triangular parts. Typically, such parts are made using molds that are designed and manufactured separately for each part, that is, a separate mold for each negative space. The Bermuda compass performs this laborious and time-consuming process in a matter of seconds. This compass has a third arm that can rotate 360 degrees around the axis of the main arm, allowing it to be adjusted instantaneously to create any geometric shape."

AWARDS

The artist and researcher of traditional arts noted: the Bermuda compass 's precise, graduated plates allow for measuring and recording correct values based on a mathematical scale, and this helps designers, artists, and artisans achieve important patterns in their products by recording measurements and increasing the speed and accuracy of their work.

While thanking Mr.Abdul Majid Sharifzadeh , head of the Traditional Arts Research Center at the Cultural Heritage Organization at the time, as well as Mr.Sajid Afsharpour for the 3D modeling of this project, Vadud said: "I hope that the Deputy Minister of Handicrafts of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage will help us implement it as soon as possible and deliver it to architects, industrial designers, sculptors, and traditional arts artists by supporting this idea."

Mohamad Ali Vadood , born in Kermanshah Province, is a wood craftsman. He is the selected artist of the 7th Fajr International Handicrafts Festival (1401), the 2022 Handicrafts Man of the Year by the World Handicrafts Council in New Delhi, and has been selected as the selected artist of the Handicrafts and Cultural Heritage section of the A Design Award World Exhibition in Italy for three times (from 2019 to 2021).
